South of El Monte is in fact four distinctive neighborhoods: Central Los Altos, Loyola Corners, Rancho, and South Los Altos. Though each area has its own unique characteristics, all of them share the same inviting charm.
Comprised of two connecting triangles is Central Los Altos, defined by its wide tree-lined streets and meticulously kept lawns. Out of the four districts, Central Los Altos has seen the most change, with many of the original Ranch homes having undergone major renovations or total rebuilds, attracting first-time buyers and developers alike. Streets such as Parma Way and Echo Drive have large lots averaging nearly 15,000 square feet, and nearly half of the homes have been rebuilt on these prime streets. This area has a nice, quiet walk to the boutiques and restaurants at Rancho Shopping Center.
Nestled between the two connecting triangles of Central Los Altos are the Rancho and Loyola Corners neighborhoods. Single-story Ranch homes on quarter-acre lots are most common, but unlike Central Los Altos, these homes tend to undergo mostly interior improvements as opposed to full-scale remodels. Loyola Corners and Rancho maintain a rustic feel, with local businesses retaining the old, country character of the community’s rich history. With Rancho Shopping Center nearby, locals can enjoy country living without compromising convenience.
South Los Altos was once filled with orchards and empty lots, but now has evolved to become a sought-after neighborhood. Slightly more affordable than its counterparts, South of El Monte has a large number of mid-century Ranch homes as well as a smattering of Eichlers, two-story Mediterranean, and Craftsman homes. Family-oriented, locals take pride in community events and love the annual summer concerts at Grant Park as well as taking advantage of the after-school programs offered at the community center.
Families of South El Monte belong to the Los Altos School District, with the exception of South Los Altos which is divided between the Los Altos School District and Cupertino Unified.
